Case and solution:
The project focused on the enhancement of booking screens situated adjacent to conference facilities. The central issue identified involved the inadequate visibility of room availability status from a distance, which impeded the ability to discern whether spaces were engaged or vacant. Moreover, there was a requirement for the interface to provide clear indication of short-term availability for purposes such as conducting brief telephone conversations within the rooms.
The development of the solution was underpinned by empirical evidence garnered from both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, including user testing.
The adopted resolution entailed the application of a semaphore-inspired principle, which utilized a color-coded background scheme to convey occupancy status: red for occupied rooms, green for available rooms, and yellow for rooms available in the short-term but scheduled to be occupied within the subsequent quarter-hour. In addition to this color-coding scheme, a comprehensive review of the user interface was conducted, scrutinizing and refining elements such as typography, button design, and navigational structure to enhance overall usability.
